Music Lessons, Life Lessons

I was recently asked to share some lessons I learned for a Hawaii Youth Symphony newsletter story. Here is that list with some additions. So much of what we learn in music can be applied to real life.

Practice consistently, carefully, and slowly.

Listen, not only to your own sound, but to others in the ensemble. Be sensitive to others, not only as musicians, but as people.

Listen to a wide variety of music. This helps you become a better performer and person.

Have confidence in your abilities, especially if you’ve put in the practice time and hard work.

Sometimes you will fail, but do not let that stop you from doing what you love.

Be adventurous. Challenge yourself. Try new things.

Learn as much as you can from your teachers, from other students, from your family, and from your own research.

Allow your personality, character, creativity, and love for music to shine through your playing. Share your music with others. Be yourself.

Applaud, praise, and support others. Everyone likes to be appreciated and loved.

Laugh. Have fun. Enjoy the moment.
